What you need to know

Established in the mid-1800's and a longtime feature of Bendigo's cityscape, the Bendigo Botanic Gardens are a lovely overall spot with a pleasant ambience that makes it one of the city's best spots for a family picnic. A veritable oasis of greenery in central Bendigo, the gardens feature a mixture of beautiful flowers, well-manicured lawns and shade-providing trees with a blend of both native Australian and exotic species that are a delight for the visual senses. The gardens have undergone a continued investment of both money and sweat, with continued extensions and development also ongoing to enhance them in the future, and stand as a great example of city planning.

There are numerous ways to enjoy a visit to the gardens; well-constructed pathways make navigating its various floral areas a joy, there are plenty of shaded areas under which to relax or read a book, and it comes with an excellent playground area with an "Alice in Wonderland"-style theme that children in particular will love. It's a great overall spot to take kids to burn off energy and get some sunshine, with slides, quirky fantasy chairs and ample space to run. One of the garden's standout features is its excellent walk-in bird aviary that is home to several varieties of Aussie parrots, while a public swimming pool comes in handy on those exceptionally hot Bendigo days.

Add in plenty of parking, clean and well-kept barbecue and toilet amenities, and a central location that makes it hard to miss, and Bendigo Botanic Gardens are an ideal meeting and gathering point in the city to spend anywhere from an hour to a whole day.
