What you need to know

The Port Macquarie region has a significant colonial history dating back to its origins as a penal colony, and this is documented in a full, comprehensive extent at the Port Macquarie Museum. Located in central Port Macquarie, this regional museum boasts an extensive collection despite its seemingly small size - it has a deceptive layout that means it's actually bigger than it looks from the outside - and contains a wonderful mixture of clothing, photos and artifacts. The museum documents the foundation and development of Port Macquarie as a city, as well as history dating back to the land's original Aboriginal inhabitants.

It's an exceptionally well-curated museum, with extensive storyboards and plaques providing additional background on its many exhibits, with 14 different rooms available for visitors to explore. The Port Macquarie Museum also does an excellent job of bringing the incredibly tough life of the early Australian colonial period to life, highlighting the difficult conditions of the time. The museum is run by friendly volunteers who are always more than willing to go into further detail on both the individual exhibits and the Port Macquarie region as a whole, and when added to the displays themselves it's possible to spend one or two hours in order to absorb everything in its entirety.

It also does a great job of catering to those visiting with kids, as the museum offers a worksheet to keep them occupied, as well as both dress-up opportunities and games to serve as further entertainment. IN all, it's an excellent rainy day activity in Port Macquarie for history buffs that can be enjoyed for a minimal price.
